Brussels--Jan. 9--Euro-zone retail sales volumes rose 1.0% in October
from the same month in 1999, Eurostat, the EU's statistical office,
reported Tuesday. At the same time Eurostat left unchanged sales growth in
September at an annual increase of 3.3%.

Compared with September, October euro-zone retail sales fell 0.2%,
Eurostat said. The September monthly increase was left unchanged at 0.4%.
Eurostat said growth rates were lower in all sectors in October.
Compared with Oct. 1999, Eurostat said growth in household goods was 3.0%:
1.2% in the food, drink and tobacco sectors and 0.2% in textiles.
On the year the strongest increases were seen in Ireland (9.6%) and
Belgium (7.1%). In Germany there was a fall of 1.4% and of 0.1% in Spain.
Sales rose 0.3% in Italy while French data were unavailable. Sales
increased 3.8% in Netherlands on the year.
In October, Eurostat said sales had decreased in all sectors, except
food, drink and tobacco (0.1%). Textiles and clothing saw a 0.6% fall from
September and household goods slumped by the same level.
On the month, sales fell 2.3% in Germany and 3.0% in Finland. These
were the biggest falls in the zone. In Italy there was no change on the
month and in Spain there was a 0.1% increase. Sales rose 0.3% in the
Netherlands compared with September.
