28 June 2001 11:33  US Treasury Secretary "pleased" with Japanese economic reforms

By Kevin Kelly Detroit, June 27 (BridgeNews) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill said the Bush administration was "pleased" with the latest economic reform plans unveiled by the Japanese prime minister. He said the pressure is now on the Japanese government to institute the plans it has on the table. "I'm really pleased with what we are seeing from the new prime minister. What they are saying is all the right things," O'Neill said. "We need to make sure they are going to do what they are saying they are going to do." O'Neill added that it was crucial for the entire world economy to "play at the top of their game." He added that the administration would do everything it could to support the Japanese reforms. "We're going to do everything we can to support them," he said. "We're anxious for them to do it as soon as they can."
