Comments: Business confidence has been stumbling around two-year lows in recent months, but not declining at the rate seen in some other eurozone countries. June's seasonally adjusted index is seen stable at May's 95 level. On the one hand the announcement last month of government's "one-hundred day package" of measures to boost growth should help confidence, offset by the ongoing slowdown in the eurozone economy.

Most observers attribute this largely to an 'election effect' after Silvio Berlusconi's center-right victory at the May 13 election, while the labor market also continues to improve. July's index is seen easing slightly from June's record high. Several analysts, rather puzzled by the recent gains, consider that the index "can't just keep improving," while Berlusconi's honeymoon period should be ready to fade.
