as government officials talked up the U.S. economy. The Dow Jones industrial average was off 0.34 to 9,605.51 after a plunge of more than 1% early on. The Nasdaq was up 7.68 points to 1,695.38. The S&P 500 Index rose 6.76 points to 1,092.54.
